1. PHOTOSHOP PLUG-INS: Adobe Photoshop's plug-in capabilities allow third parties to create new features that can be automatically accessed from within the program. The retail version of Adobe Photoshop supports three kinds of plug-ins: Acquisition (to support scanners and non-standard file formats); Export (to support special printers and saving in non-standard formats); and Filters (to apply effects to images). The Try-Out version supports only Acquisition plug-ins which are available directly from 3rd party vendors (for example scanner manufacturers) who have written Photoshop-compatible modules.
To use an Acquire plug-in, you must place it in the same folder as the Photoshop Preferences file. Photoshop Try-Out creates the Preferences file in the System folder of your startup disk. Once the plug-in is installed in the correct location, restart the program. The module is then accessed via the Acquire option in the File menu.
2. SYSTEM 7 VIRTUAL MEMORY: Photoshop has a virtual memory scheme designed to optimize the application's performance. System 7.0 has its own virtual memory management scheme. Photoshop's virtual memory is used to swap image data to a hard drive if there is not enough RAM to contain the data. Similarly, System 7.0's virtual memory is used to swap active application programs to a hard disk when there is not enough memory to hold them all simultaneously.
In general, there are no inherent problems between the Photoshop virtual memory setup and that of System 7.0; however, you must take certain steps to insure that the two memory schemes do not conflict. If they do, you may experience a noticeable degradation in Photoshop's performance.
You can either turn off the System 7.0 virtual memory, or use the following procedure to avoid virtual memory problems:
- Quit all applications except those that you plan to run simultaneously with Photoshop.
- Choose "About the Finder" from the Apple menu and verify the size of the Largest Unused Block in the "About the Finder" window.
- Click the Adobe Photoshop program icon and choose "Get Info" from the File menu. The Info window appears.
- Set the Application Memory Size to an amount at least 100 kilobytes less than the Largest Unused Block value.
2. VIDEO CARD PROBLEMS: Some SuperMac accelerated video cards contain a ROM bug that prevents display of the tonal curve in the Arbitrary Map dialog box and the tick marks on the rulers. To alleviate this problem, either turn off QuickDraw acceleration or contact SuperMac Technologies at 408-245-0646 for information regarding ROM upgrades.
